Smart 453 charging issue

So a year ago, I got a 2017 Smart 453 Electric, and in April 2023, there was a recall update for the charger. The dealer gave me a quotation of $7,200 to replace the HV charger after the car stopped charging three weeks ago. Since the new car warranty expired in July 2023, MBUSA is not providing any support, even though the vehicle was covered under warranty for the first six months. I'm not sure what to do with the automobile, which has been sitting at the dealership for weeks now.
 
I haven’t received any fault codes yet. The dealer didn’t mention anything specific, but they did say the HV charger needs to be replaced. Should I ask for the codes?

Yeah, definitely ask for those fault codes! They could give you some solid clues about whats really going on and might even point to a quick fix or workaround that doesn't involve swapping out the charger. Sometimes it’s just something as simple as a fuse or wiring issue, could save you a ton of cash!

Since the car stopped charging just three weeks after the recall update, it strongly suggests the problem is related to the recall work itself. I'd definitely push back harder with MBUSA, emphasizing that the issue likely stems from the recall and that it's unfair to be stuck with such a massive bill so soon after the warranty expired.

Escalate the issue if possible, and then check if there are any consumer protection laws in your area that might help.
