I’m considering an electric 451, and the dealer claims the HV battery is at 90%. The car’s been sitting for months, charged sporadically. In a recent test, the CAP min was 52 Ah. If the new reading is 45 Ah, how does that translate to battery performance percentage?

A new battery should have at least 50 Ah. So, 51.4 Ah for an old car is really good. 45 Ah would be 90% of new. 51.4 Ah is like 102.8% of new, which is awesome for an old battery. I don't get what you mean by "percentage of battery performance."

By "percentage of battery performance," I meant how the current capacity compares to the original battery's range and efficiency. It sounds like 45 Ah still offers decent performance.

I don't know if you got it or not, but before deciding, make sure you get the most recent numbers.

If your battery was originally 52 Ah and now it's reading 45 Ah, you can figure out the percentage like this: (45 / 52) * 100 = about 86.5%. That means it's got roughly 86-87% of its original juice. The dealer's 90% estimate is pretty close, but it's always a good idea to double-check yourself if you can. Since the car's been sitting around for months with only occasional charging, you might actually get some of that capacity back if you use it regularly and charge it properly.

Huh! A dealer claiming 90% while the car has been sitting and the CAP min dropping from 52Ah to 45Ah raises some questions. A drop in Ah like that does suggest some degradation. So, while 90% might have been close to the battery health at some point, the recent reading suggests it's closer to 86%, and that's after sitting for months. Keep in mind, battery health isn't perfectly linear, and further degradation could occur more quickly.

Get a second opinion from an independent EV mechanic and asking for more detailed battery health reports if possible. Don't just take the dealer's word for it, especially with that discrepancy in the Ah readings.
