So my 2017 Smart Fortwo EV decided to throw a weird “Malfunction - Visit Workshop” error at me. The car’s driving fine, but I’m itching to figure out what triggered that code. Tried using my OBDLink MX+ with various software, but no luck. Has anyone found a way to pull the specific error code? Any tips on OBD2 readers or diagnostic tools that actually work would be a life-saver. Appreciate it!

Yeah, I wouldn't rely on a generic parts store scanner for much more than basic diagnostics. I've had decent luck with the iCarsoft budget scanner, especially for older Benz models. However, it might not be the best tool for EV-specific issues.

If you need a more comprehensive scanner, you could consider investing in a higher-end iCarsoft model or exploring other professional-grade options.

Yeah I was kind of expecting that, haha. Those generic OBD2 readers just don't seem to cut it for these types of errors, especially with EVs. I’ve heard about iCarsoft, but like you said, it might not be the best fit for EV stuff. I’ll definitely check out some of the higher end models, maybe even something more tailored for EVs. Thanks.

Thanks, those are some solid suggestions! I’ll definitely check them out. I’m leaning toward something that can dig into deeper EV-specific codes, especially around the battery and drivetrain, so I don’t miss any crucial details. Hopefully, one of those will do the trick. Appreciate the help!
