I’ve been thinking ahead to the (hopefully distant) day when my 2013 Smart ED Cabrio might need replacing, though fingers crossed it doesn’t happen soon. But realistically, if it did, I’ve been wondering if there’s another car out there that can match the fun factor of the Smart, especially for short errands and sunny weather drives.

The Mini Cooper SE keeps coming up in my searches, and it sounds promising. People say it’s fun to drive, but I’m curious, has anyone here driven both the Smart and the Mini? I’m trying to figure out what “fun” means for the Mini. Is it comparable to the Smart’s zippy, go-anywhere vibe, or is it a totally different kind of experience?

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s driven the Mini electric version, but even impressions from gas Minis would help since they say the driving feel is pretty similar. I know the SE isn’t a convertible (a big downside for me), but it’s still one of the few compact EVs that seems to aim for that quirky, fun vibe.

For now, I’m enjoying every moment with my Cabrio, but I’m curious about what could come next. If you’ve driven both or have thoughts on how the two compare, let me know!

Why a Mini Cooper and not a Fiat 500e? It is closer to the Smart ED, and it has faster charging and a bit more range. Is there a more specific reason you stopped to Mini Cooper SE?

Oh, both of these cars are such gems in their own way! I haven’t driven the SE, but I can tell you it’s got a great reputation for being one of the most fun EVs to drive. It’s got more power and range than the Smart EQ, so if you’re ever tempted to venture further, it’s a great option. That said, nothing quite matches the sheer quirkiness of the Smart for city life. If the Mini could deliver on some convertible vibes, it might be a perfect replacement, but until then, the Smart holds the edge for sunny-day fun, hands down.
